Sciospec at IWIS 2025 – Connecting with and Training the Next Generation of Impedance Experts

From September 23–26, 2025, the 18th International Workshop on Impedance Spectroscopy (IWIS) gathered leading experts, researchers, and innovators at Technische Universität Chemnitz, Germany. Since its launch in 2008, IWIS has become the central meeting point for the global impedance spectroscopy (EIS) community — connecting disciplines from materials science, electrochemistry, and sensor technology to biology and medicine.

As a long-standing supporter of the community, Sciospec joined IWIS 2025 as sponsor and active contributor, strengthening our close connection to the academic ecosystem that drives innovation in impedance measurement and instrumentation.

Educating through practice: our workshop with HTWK Leipzig and the Max Planck Institute

A clear highlight of this year’s event was our joint workshop on the fundamentals of impedance spectroscopy and compensation methods, organized in collaboration with the University of Applied Sciences (HTWK) Leipzig and the Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences, Leipzig.
Led by Prof. Konstantin Weise and Martin Bulst (Sciospec), the session bridged the gap between conceptual understanding and hands-on experimentation — a format that resonated deeply with students and professionals alike:

  • Concepts and theory: Prof. Weise introduced the mathematical and physical foundations of compensation methods in impedance spectroscopy.

  • Hands-on experiments: Participants used Sciospec instruments to collect their own measurement data, analyze parasitic effects, and apply compensation in practical setups.

  • Live coding in Python: Guided by Moritz Gerber, attendees implemented and compared different compensation strategies in real time.

  • Open discussion: The workshop concluded with reflections on how these techniques translate into real-world research and industrial measurement tasks.

The workshop was praised for its unique mix of theory, data, and tactile learning — showing that understanding impedance spectroscopy isn’t just about equations, but about developing intuition through real instruments and real data. It reflected Sciospec’s broader mission to make electrical impedance spectroscopy and tomography (EIT) accessible and applicable at every stage of education and research. By actively supporting academic training and open discussion, we help shape the next generation of scientists and engineers who will define how impedance technology evolves.

Sciospec technology is everywhere

Throughout the conference, Sciospec systems were featured in presentations and posters across multiple research domains. Our exhibition showcased the latest in electrical impedance spectroscopy and tomography (EIT) — from compact benchtop impedance analyzers and modular research instruments to scalable, high-channel systems for automated testing and industrial process control. The diversity of applications demonstrated how Sciospec technology provides a seamless bridge from laboratory research to real-world implementation.

Part of the IWIS story since day one

Our relationship with IWIS runs deep. Sciospec founder Sebastian Wegner attended the very first IWIS in 2008 as an exhibitor and speaker — two years before founding Sciospec.
Since then, we’ve grown alongside the community, helping to advance impedance spectroscopy as both a scientific discipline and a practical tool for innovation in bioanalytics, materials testing, and medical technology.

Shaping the future of measurement education and research

IWIS 2025 reaffirmed Sciospec’s role at the intersection of academic research, education, and technological development. By empowering researchers with the right tools and knowledge, we continue to make electrical impedance spectroscopy and tomography more accessible, scalable, and impactful — from the classroom to the lab and beyond.
